Historic Fortress Walls, Encountering 200 Years of History
In 1793, Nguyễn Ánh defeated the Tây Sơn army and built a 36,000 square meter defensive fortress at Diên Khánh. Diên Khánh was designed in the 17th-18th century European Vauban military architectural style. Along with the Imperial Citadel of Huế, it is one of the best-preserved ancient fortresses in Vietnam that retains its original architectural style. Today, this historic site is designated as a national cultural heritage and draws many tourists and history researchers each year.

Diên Khánh Fortress is located approximately 10 km southwest of Nha Trang. Here are the options to get there from the city center:
Personal vehicle or motorbike
From Nha Trang, follow National Highway 23/10 or Võ Nguyên Giáp Road toward Diên Khánh town, then turn right onto Lý Tự Trọng Road and continue for about 5 km to reach the main gate of the fortress. Total travel time is approximately 20 minutes.
Taxi or ride-hailing app
You can take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app such as Grab to access the site. At about 10 km from Nha Trang city center, it is convenient for a day trip. Travel costs typically range from 50,000 to 100,000 VND for a taxi.
Exploring the fortress walls: Following four gates
The fortress walls form a regular hexagon shape with a height of 3.5 meters. Originally there were 6 gates, but currently 4 remain and are all in good condition. The walkway on top of the walls is approximately 5.35 meters wide, and the total length of the fortress walls is 1,656 meters.

Chinese characters representing the cardinal directions are inscribed above each gate. Currently a highway passes through the gates, so caution is needed when taking photos, but you can climb the gate towers themselves and take a walk along the fortress walls.

Suggested itinerary
- Enter at East Gate: Start at the East Gate on Lý Tự Trọng Road
- Walk along the walls: Proceed from east to south or counterclockwise, taking approximately 1.5–2 hours
- Visit each gate: Climb the gate towers to view the inner courtyard and surroundings
- Exit at West Gate: Complete the circuit at the opposite gate
Visitor tips and notes
- Hours: As a tourist site, it is generally open from sunrise to sunset, but please confirm official operating hours before your visit.
- Footwear: The outer face of the walls is nearly vertical while the inner face is gentle with two tiers of stairs, so comfortable athletic shoes or trekking shoes are recommended.
- Sun protection: The open fortress walls expose visitors to strong sunlight, so bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Photography: Be mindful of vehicles passing through the gates. Visiting early morning or late afternoon provides better lighting conditions for photos.
Food and facilities nearby
Within Diên Khánh town, there are small eateries and local markets where you can get a quick meal. Bánh ướt (steamed rice flour cake), a local specialty of Diên Khánh, is popular. Prices are generally lower than in Nha Trang city center, so dining at local restaurants rather than convenience stores near tourist sites offers better value. However, please choose based on your own personal hygiene standards.

Diên Khánh Fortress underwent restoration and repairs to four gates and some wall sections in 2003, and additional restoration work was conducted by the Khánh Hòa authorities in 2010. It is safest to verify the current condition through the managing authorities and latest official information. During the rainy season (September–December), the fortress walls may become slippery with moisture, so take care for safety and wear comfortable shoes.
